We were forewarned the Lake District was rainy this time of year. It was an apt prophesy. The area is absolutely beautiful and perfect for sports and outdoor activites...except in the rain. After five days, we decided to leave and are enroute to La Serena which promises to have sun and almost no precipitation.

Valdivia Fish Market

We're checking out the menu.

And we see that some others are, as well. Look behind the guy gutting the fish.

The second third of our time with our friends took us to Vina del Mar in Renaca. 4206987D2219AC681722035711C0B790.jpg

For a day trip we visited the beautiful town of Zapallar (Montecito on the ocean). Here we are enjoying lunch.4243298B2219AC68172EF80386544F42.jpg

For the last third of our time we went to Marcela and Sergio's country home in the red wine area of Colchagua. They refer to their home as "little" which came as a surprise to us.
The dining room......
And our first meal, sausages, Chilean-style polenta and the delicious salsa, pebre.

The chic in Santiago and beyond

Thanks to our extraordinary friends, Marcela and Sergio, we saw the best of the city. There knowledge is profound as to the history, culture, and politics of their country. Add to this that Marcela is an excellent cook and Sergio is as knowledgeable about wine as a sommelier. They have many friends and relatives with lovely homes and apartments all over. We stayed in several and visited others, all welcoming. In the city, Bellavista is chic bohemian and Golf is newly elegant. Three years ago Chile had an 8.8 earthquake. Signs of the destruction and subsequent rebuilding can be seen everywhere.

We left the city to visit another family estate in Pirque, an exclusive suburb. Our favorite lunch place:

From there we tasted some wines in Maipo valley and drank a very good Sauvignon Blanc at Santa Rita in the Casablanca valley known for its white wines and espumante. Here we are:

On another day we took a side trip to Valparaiso to look at the colorful houses and graffiti.

Now for a stay on the Pacific Ocean but this time not in MB. More about that in the next blog entry.
